My idea is to look closely at the both leading ladies Grace Kelly and Sophia Loren as they are such iconic figure's in old Hollywood. They appear with the heartthrob Carry Grant in both films.
These to iconic female stars are very different but have similar roles in each film. Grace Kelly is more the girl next door, the women every women wanted to be. Where as Sophia Loren is the sexy Italian women who is more daring.
This takes me back to the book Paris versus New York, I could look at the differences to these two women.

These images are showing the two leading ladies fashion, just by looking at these simple images you can instantly tell that they are different. Grace kelly is more ladylike, not to sexually revealing whereas Sophia Loren is the opposite with low cut dress that are a tight fit. The fashion that these to ladies wear just shows the different roles that they play in films, which you can see in both films.
The IMB for Houseboat and To Catch a Thief:
Looking at the films again I have found that I would like to look more into the idea of metaphors for sex and look into what Hollywood could and couldn't do in the 1950's.

This link above tells you that in 1930 to 1968 what was and wasn't allowed in movies at that time for audiences. Such as white slavery, childbirth, offence, arson or rape are a few examples. Many things were you had to be careful on how they were brought about in films.
This is way I think especially in the bell and firework scene that metaphors were used as it was seen to be to racy for the 1950's.
The Hays code, this is what is nickname is, was brought about simply because the entertainment world is seen to influence the real world and people's actions. This did not mean they wanted movies t show how people should act but they simply wanted to keep things clean and show responsibility and not show have to much impact on people like maybe they do today. As people take things as reality in today's society which has represented in shootings across America.
